Rara Avis combines over 15 years of multi-genre musical study with an intuitive understanding of modern technology. His classical training partnered with his passion for electronic dance music, results in original lush downtempo compositions fuelled with psychedelic guitar, vocals, and a healthy dose of improvisation from his instrumental roots .
Rara’s musical identity began to form as a teenager by exploring his zeal for blues guitar and Jimi Hendrix. To further broaden his knowledge, he studied jazz, classical, theory, arranging, ear training, music history, vocals, percussion, keyboards, and digital music production, while attending Malaspina College on Vancouver Island, Canada.
His musical open-mindedness led him to discover the Moontribe collective from Southern California, a community of electronic music enthusiasts who throw legendary full moon gatherings. After experiencing their technological tribal energy Rara relocated to Los Angeles to pursue his passion for electronic music.
In Los Angeles, Rara collaborated with many of the leading underground producers and DJ’s on the scene.
From these years sprang many things - one of which being the Desert Dwellers production team - making music alongside Treavor Moontribe and Amani Friend. Their production focuses on downtempo with excursions into tribal house and trance with an underlying organic foundation.
While in LA Rara also became heavily involved with Zen Dancing & the Shaman's Dream family, an improvisational global fusion dance band led by Craig Kohland, Micheline Berry, and an array of different artists gathered from over 7 years of doing these events on a bi-monthly basis. This event continues to be a staple in the now beurgeoning LA yoga scene.
Rara still works with the band, but now in a studio setting now putting out the 'Dream' Series with Sounds True Music, as he no longer lives in LA.
Aside from the amazing work Rara gets to do in his collaborations, there is also his beloved solo work, that focuses more on a blend of his singing/songwriting, jazz & blues roots with chill out, ambient and downtempo beats galore...
Six Degrees Records, Rara's favorite record label, is now distributing his solo work, wihch is a long time dream come true.
So keep an eye out for many musical amalgamations, inspired by the reclusive-ness of his current surroundings in Harbin Hot Springs, California. His music weaves intricate tapestries of fluent world rhythms, scorching guitar melodies with electro overtones. Shaktified showcases Rara Avis’ latest developments into the nature of sound.
Speaking of which, Rara's roots also include Sound Healing - working with yoga teacher David Goulet, on Vancouver Island in the 90's... performing healing work on cancer patients using a variety of sound delivery methods - massage tables with speakers built in, tibent brass bowls, gongs, visuals, etc. - to help people relax into their own ability to heal themselves was and remains to be the goal of making music.
May we all feel harmony, melody and rhythm - united as one in the glory of song.
Om, Shanti.
